We have a busy fixture list in May
Tues 7 Home Grimsby

Weds 22 Home Kenwick (PM)
I will aim to combine the sign-up sheets for all the May Fixtures in one so we can plan ahead.
A reminder too for Home matches. To keep costs equitable, I suggest that we share the cost of drinks for our guest pairings.
We have entered a team again in the Taskers Midlands Trophy. We have our first game against Sitwell at Home on Weds 3rd April. Good luck to John Ogden and the team!
TRIBUTE TO THE DAMBUSTERS 12th APRIL
Thanks to those who have reserved a place, please pay Sue as soon as possible if you have not already done so.
We are set for a good night with only a handful of tickets remaining, there is a limit of 50 due to fire regs.

Enjoy your golfing and a Happy Easter to all.

HONORARY MEMBERSHIPS
Congratulations to Grant Moffat and Bob Stannard who have both received Honorary Membership certificates of the Seniors Section.
FEBRUARY COMPETITIONS
Tuesday 6 Greensomes
Tuesday 13 Stableford with a Mulligan
Tuesday 20 Texas Scramble (changed from Delaney version)
Tuesday 27 Am-Am
The 9 hole competition on 13th will be a ‘Valentine’s Day’ Stableford off the RED tees (non qualifier)
AM-AM HANDICAP CHANGES
There have been ongoing discussions regarding appropriate handicap allowance for 3 balls in 4-man Am-Am formats. Paul has crunched some numbers and we have agreed to move from 95% handicap to 100% allowance for any 3 balls whilst retaining 85% for 4 balls. This should enable 3 ball scores to be more competitive.
MARCH –NEW TROPHY COMPETITION
Looking ahead to next month, a note for your diaries. We have a new competition, Pairs Scramble, with a Trophy kindly sponsored by Ray Mayfield. It will be a shotgun start at 8:30 followed by a served buffet breakfast and the trophy presentation. Entry will be £7.50 including the subsidised breakfast. Unfortunately there is no ‘non-breakfast’ entry fee option.
Given the recent weather we have had fewer meetings together. I do hope that as many as possible will take this opportunity to enter and enjoy a social breakfast.
Breakfast will be available too, to any 9 hole competitors at £5.50 (inc. comp fee) if advised in advance.
WINTER KNOCKOUTS
First round matches all completed, thank you. Please could you aim to play next round by 28th February and finals by the end of March. Good luck!
For those of us in the Plate, the draw is now on the notice board.
INTER CLUB MATCHES
We kick off the year with an away fixture at Holme Hall on Wednesday 20 March. Sign-up sheets will be on the board soon. If you have not played in a match before please do consider taking part and speak to me or other members if you are unsure of anything. It’s a great opportunity to play other courses in a friendly environment for the cost of a meal.
Our full 2024 calendar is on the notice board and in due course we will set out the home and away matches separately. As advised previously we have new matches against Normanby Hall and Gainsborough this year.
It is my intention to minimise cost and time commitment for us all and would encourage members to make diary dates for the year and support our club matches as often as you can.
SOCIAL NIGHT FRIDAY 12 APRIL
Coming to the club...the Awesome Exploits of 617 Squadron...the DAMBUSTERS told in Song and Screen.
More details and tickets available soon! Proceeds in aid of this year’s charity MNDa.

TEXAS SCRAMBLE 2ND January
We begin the New Year with a Scramble Competition on Tuesday. Let’s hope that the ground conditions are favourable for us. Entries are open on V1 if you have not entered as yet.
Please note that if you have received a ‘Strike Mat’ for Christmas, they are ideal to protect the turf in wet conditions but unless permitted under a local rule, only allowed for use in general, non-competitive play.
WINTER KNOCKOUTS
First round completion dates extended to 31st January. Fingers crossed we get better weather during January so we can crack on with this competition.
CHRISTMAS PARTY NIGHT
It was great to see our Party Night on 12th December so well supported. Compliments to the Chef and thanks to Anne and the catering staff.
We tried something a little different this year. Paul and Lynn were kind enough to perform an excellent acoustic set in a room layout which was not ideal. I have passed on the positive feedback I received from several of you.
Many thanks to everyone who donated prizes and bought raffle tickets and entered the subsequent name-card on the delayed Santa’s Scramble held 19th December. I am delighted to say that as a result of your generosity a total of £340 was raised for MNDa.
Best wishes to all for a Happy and Healthy 2024

5th DECEMBER 2023
The course unfortunately remains closed again today 5th December, so our next meeting will be the Santas Scramble on 12th December. Please remember your Christmas Jumpers, Santa Costumes etc. There will be a prize for the best dressed competitor!
There will be a Halfway House that day with traditional Christmas Fayre and the opportunity to buy tickets for our Charity Raffle in aid of MNDa. Please be generous with your support, there are lots of prizes to be won!
If we do have to play a reduced number of holes we will have the Halfway House at the end of our rounds.
CLUB FRIENDLY MATCHES.
Our last match of the season was a 5½-2½ win at home against Holme Hall on 25th October. It was good to close off the season with a victory and thanks to all who played.
2024 FIXTURES
The annual calendar is now published on the website and this coming year includes new matches against Gainsborough and Normanby Hall.
We need a larger match squad for our friendly fixtures, so please do play whenever you can next year and take the opportunity to visit different courses and support the Section both home and away.
We also have included a new Scramble Trophy Competition to be played in March as well as a new 9 Hole Spring Cup and a 5 round 9 Hole Summer Trophy.
In addition, two Exchange Days have been arranged with Boston and Spalding.
WINTER KNOCKOUTS (First round extension)
Opportunities to play have been very limited since the draw was made and the weather prospects still remain difficult. We have therefore extended the first rounds to be played by 31st January and will decide on subsequent rounds in due course.
CHRISTMAS DINNER & PARTY NIGHT 12th DECEMBER
I am delighted to say there are a good number of bookings for our annual Christmas celebration. Please note that Dinner will be served at 7pm. I am looking forward to seeing everyone and am sure we will have an enjoyable evening.
Happy Christmas to all and let’s hope we can play some golf again soon!

CAPTAINS NEWSLETTER
Firstly, can I start by thanking Paul for his hard work and his successful captaincy last year. We have a well organised, successful and enjoyable Seniors Section and this is due in no small part to Paul’s commitment.
Can I also welcome John Ogden to role of Vice-Captain and I look forward to working together with John in the year ahead.
I have some plans for our golf fixture list and social calendar and hope that with your continued support we can all enjoy our golf together in 2023/24.
This week we hosted Sleaford at home and despite some close run matches the overall result was a 6-2 win for the visitors. An enjoyable day nevertheless played in good sprit. Unfortunately this was our final match against Sleaford as the fixture has been dropped next year by mutual agreement.

Let’s hope for better luck when we play our final match of the season, a rearranged fixture against Holme Hall on Wednesday 25 October (first tee 11 a.m.)
WINTER KNOCKOUT PAIRS TROPHY and SINGLES TROPHY
Sign-up sheets are on the board now for these two Matchplay competitions. Entry fees need to be paid by the 1st November to secure your place in the first round draw. Entry fees a modest £3 per person.

CHRISTMAS DINNER & PARTY NIGHT TUESDAY 12th DECEMBER
As ever Christmas seems to come round earlier each year....preparations are underway and the Menu and table plans are now on the board.
This year there will be Musical Entertainment to follow our Dinner and of course, also the opportunity for our traditional rendition of the 12 Days of Christmas!
I hope that all Section Members will be able to attend our special Christmas social event this year.
CAPTAINS CHARITY 2023/24
I announced at the AGM that my chosen charity is Motor Neurone Disease, North and North East Lincs. support group.
This group is run entirely by volunteers and aims to provide the best possible support to local people with MND, their families and carers.
I hope to be able to provide more details on the charity in the months ahead but in the meantime please continue to be generous with your donations to help those affected by this life–shortening and incurable disease.

TUESDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER
On this day we were planning to have a clubhouse draw. As the match with Elsham has been moved from the Wednesday to Tuesday morning this is not now practical. The competition is available to enter on V1.
There is of course no reason not to pop in the clubhouse before your round for a cuppa and a chat. Please note that the start times for the 9 holer will not be as late as billed, however we are currently not able to overlap competitions on V1. This will be sorted when the draws are done on Monday – the first tee off in the 9 holer will be 9:40 or 9:50.
COMPETITIONS AND MATCHES
The remaining fixtures for September are:
Sunday 10th Team Challenge
Tuesday 12th Am-Am
Tuesday 12th Home match with Elsham
Tuesday 19th Individual Stableford inc Summer Trophy R5
Wednesday 20th Away match at Kenwick Park
Tuesday 26th Victor Ludorum & Best of The Rest
AGM
The AGM will follow the 3 clubs competition on 3rd October and the Presentation Dinner will follow that evening. You can book your tables and menu choices for the dinner on our board in the foyer and sheets are also available for nominations to the committee. Your annual fees of £6 should be paid in the Pro shop prior to the AGM (In envelope with name & senior number).
We are looking to fill 3 posts: Treasurer, Halfway House Manager and Vice Captain.
If you feel that you would like to take on the Vice Captain role please talk to Chris Horn.
INTER CLUB MATCHES
On 2nd August we were due to play Holme Hall, but due to the extreme weather the match was postponed until October. We visited Grimsby on 23rd August and were narrowly defeated 3½ - 4½.
Back at Waltham on 29th August we took on the Juniors for the Whittaker Trophy where, for the first time in 14 years the match was drawn 3 – 3. On 7th September we played against the Ladies for the Putter Trophy.
The Ladies were kind enough to treat us to afternoon tea following the match which we won 11 – 3, which was not very gentlemanly of us, but was a nice boost ahead of the Team Challenge on Sunday.
Our next match is at home to Elsham on Tuesday 12th September and we are still looking for a few players. If you can play please sign up on the sheet or let me know as soon as possible.
SENIOR OPEN
The Open on 22nd August was the usual success and thanks to everyone who lent their services on the day and prior. Thanks too are due to everyone who contributed prizes for the raffle which raised almost £1,000 on the day and a further £80 from a namecard for a 9 hole playing lesson with Steve Bennett won by Len Garratt. This has boosted my Captain’s Charity funds past the £4,000 mark. A huge thank you to everyone who has contributed over the year and especially to Sue who has collected so much of it from you all.
SAD NEWS
Many of you will remember playing with Dave Reed who was a section member until recently. Dave has passed away following a heart attack whilst on a family holiday in Florida. Our thoughts are with his friends and family.
A THANK YOU
I would like to say a huge thank you to all the members who have supported me over my year as Captain. It has been an honour to fill the role and I am sure you will give that same level of support to Chris when he takes over in 3 weeks time.
Enjoy your golfing

CAPTAIN’S CHARITY DAY
Many thanks to everyone who helped to make the Charity Day on Tuesday 6th June such a success. The Traffic Light Scramble went down well and will feature again next year. Thanks to your generosity and that of the sponsors we raised over £1,000 on the day towards my charity, Naomi’s Garden. This was followed on 21st June with a charity quiz night – thanks to Paul Teanby for acting as quizmaster and to everyone who attended.
TUESDAY 18TH JULY
On Tuesday 18th July we will be meeting in the clubhouse from 07:45. Entries will close at 08:10 and the draw will follow. Entry fee is £2 payable in the bar. Competition is Individual Stableford and is the second round of the Summer Trophy.
For the 9 holer on that morning, players should still book on V1 – entries close at 08:10 on Tuesday morning. The draw will take place as soon as the 18 hole draw has been done. 9 holers can come and join in with everyone from 07:45 if they wish. The 9 hole competition will start not earlier than 09:00. The entry fee will be £1 payable in the Pro Shop.
EXCHANGE DAY
On Tuesday 8th August we have our Exchange Day at Boston. The cost on the day is £20 which includes a bacon or sausage bun on arrival with tea or coffee, golf and prizes and a one course meal. Please sign up on the sheet in the clubhouse. We will not be taking a coach this year as the cost is prohibitive, based on last year’s usage it would be around £30 a head. If you are able to, please take someone with you. I understand that the greens have recovered after last year’s problems so we should have a great day out.

SURVEY
Thanks to everyone who replied to the survey on our clubhouse draws which was discussed at our April committee meeting.
The survey showed that the majority did not want clubhouse draws at all. We took into account that of the 29 who did the survey and attended the AGM, where a motion was passed to have one draw a month in the clubhouse, there was a majority in favour of not having any clubhouse draws. We also took into account that asking members who attended a gathering in the clubhouse (the AGM) to decide whether we should gather in the clubhouse was unlikely to give a decision representative of the whole memberships views. The decision was therefore made to have just 2 further clubhouse draws this season which will be in July and September.
The results are available on our website.
APRIL COMPETITIONS
Competitions for the rest of the month are:
Tuesday 9th Individual Stableford
Tuesday 16th Fred Rayner Decennial Trophy (Yellowball) - £5 entry to include breakfast to follow golf
Tuesday 23rd Pairs Cup
Tuesday 30th {Seniors Championship - Nett for the Greenway Bowl
Wednesday 31st { 36 holes - Gross for Alan Wade Trophy
CAPTAIN’S CHARITY DAY
The event on 6th June will be a Traffic Light Scramble where we will alternate between White, Yellow and Red tees. There will be a crazy putting competition and a raffle. The winners will be the first recipients of a splendid trophy donated by Mally Gaffing. We have been busy enlisting sponsors and prize donors. If you or anyone you know would like to sponsor a tee at £25 or donate a raffle prize, please let myself or Sue know.
INTER CLUB MATCHES
Our inter club fixtures continued with a 4½-3½ win over Ashby Decoy at home on 4th April.
On 17th April we took a team of just 5 pairs to Sleaford, losing 1-4.
On 25th April we visited Seacroft where we were defeated 1½-6½. We don’t travel well!
On May 2nd we entertained Louth to whom we were conceding 129 shots nett. They did not show us the same generosity, as we lost 3-5.
In the Taskers Trophy plate competition we will be playing Stoke Rochford at home on Sunday 28th May.

INTER CLUB MATCHES
We start our inter club fixtures on Wednesday 22nd March at Holme Hall. Thanks to all who put their names down on the sheet, enabling the team to be selected nearly three weeks ahead of the match.
This year for the first time we have entered a team in the Taskers Trophy, which is an inter club knockout across the Midlands consisting of 7 singles matches. A sheet is on the board if you are interested in playing in the first round against Bondhay G.C. at Waltham on Monday 27th March at 11:00 a.m.
INTER CLUB MATCHES
Matches start early again this year with us visiting Holme Hall on 22nd March. Keep your eyes peeled for the team sheet which will be posted around the end of this month.
For our 10 home matches this season, I have agreed with Anne a varied menu and a small reduction in prices. The cost of a 2 course meal inc. a gratuity and tea/coffee on arrival will be £15 each.
It will be nice to see a bit more support for these fixtures this year, rather than having to chase around for a team at the last minute. Higher handicaps are welcome, as we tend to find we are giving a lot of shots away to other clubs.
BIRD BOXES
Thanks to Mike Rands (ladder man), Graham Robinson (screwdriver man), Sue Enderby (buggy woman) and Chris Horn (project manager) the bird boxes have been moved to more appropriate places and are ready to house any starlings looking for a spring break.
BINGO NIGHT

If you would like to come, please book your table with the bar.
FRED RAYNER
As many of you will now be aware we lost our most senior member, Fred Rayner on 14th February. His funeral will be held at the crematorium on Monday 13th March at 10:30 a.m. It has been requested that mourners wear something bright. I hope to see a great turnout from our section on that day.

BINGO NIGHT
On Wednesday 29th March we are holding a Bingo Night. We are starting at 7:30 p.m. Food will be available prior to the Bingo. It will cost you £10 for 7 cards and there will be cash prizes. We will be raising money for the Captain’s Charity on the night.
Enjoy your golfing

TUESDAY 7th FEBRUARY 2023
On Tuesday 7th February we will be meeting in the clubhouse from 07:45. Entries will close at 08:10 and the draw will follow. Entry fee is £2 payable in the bar. We hope to see a lot more players supporting the morning gatherings as the Scramble in January had only 26 players. Please arrive in good time, as we are playing Greensomes, which can only be played in pairs. If we have an odd number, the last to register will miss out, but may play in the 9 holer.
For the 9 holer on that morning, players should still book on V1 – entries close at 08:10 on Tuesday morning. The draw will take place as soon as the Greensomes draw has been done. 9 holers can come and join in with everyone from 07:45 if they wish. The 9 hole competition will start not earlier than 09:00. The entry fee will be £1 payable in the Pro Shop.
FEBRUARY COMPETITIONS
Competitions for the rest of the month are:
Tuesday 14 Stableford with a Mulligan
Tuesday 21 Texas Scramble
Tuesday 28 Am-Am
Start times will revert to 08:00 a.m.
The 9 hole competitions which would normally alternate between the front and back 9’s may be changed at late notice for the next couple of months while Graham and his staff are working on the bunkers and closing holes to avoid us whacking balls at them.
WINTER KNOCKOUTS
Thanks to everyone who managed to get their matches played by the 31st January deadline. If you are playing a match when a hole is out of play, you need to agree with your opponent(s) before you start whether to either agree a half on the closed hole, or to play your first hole again at the end. If you are playing one hole twice, strokes should be taken at the lowest index holes i.e. if stroke index 7 is closed and you are receiving 10 strokes, you will take them at indexes 1-6 and 8-11.

The green staff have installed the 18 starling boxes, but not quite in accordance with the RSPB siting instructions, so they may well be moving in the next few weeks.

STABLEFORD 6th DECEMBER
On 6th December we will be meeting in the clubhouse from 07:55. Entries will close at 08:20 and the draw will follow. Entry fee is £2.
For the 9 holer on that morning, players should still book on V1. The draw will take place as soon as the stableford draw has been done. 9 holers can come and join in with everyone from 07:55 if they wish. The 9 hole competition will start not earlier than 09:00. The entry fee will be £1.
Starting from Monday 5th for 5 days, the green staff will be renovating the bunkers on the 9th hole using the same system as on the 1st hole. For this period including Tuesday, the course will be reduced to 17 holes. The main competition will therefore be a non-qualifier on Tuesday. When you complete the 8th hole you should proceed up the right edge of the 9th hole, keeping well away from the green staff and their equipment and proceed down the path either to the 10th tee or back to the clubhouse if you have finished your round. Please do not walk up the 10th hole as players will be coming towards you.
WINTER KNOCKOUTS

The Seniors Christmas Party Night is on Tuesday 13th December 6:30 for 7:00pm. The cost is £23.65 payable at the bar. We will be having a traditional sing along and playing reverse bingo.

The Seniors Santa’s Scramble is on Tuesday 13th December. Enter on V1. We will have an excellent halfway house and hope to see as many of you as possible in festive dress.
On 27th December the club will be holding its version of Santa’s Scramble so there will be no Senior’s event that day. If you would like to play that day, you can enter on V1 as a team of four. It will be a shotgun start at 9:00 am.
